Why did it break down?

There’s a bunch of reasons your fridge may be having issues. More than likely, if you have one issue on your appliance there’s going to be another somewhere else. The common culprits are usually the coils for the condenser being clocked, the relay or the compressor, heater, timer or temperature controls, all of which may have problems.

Most of these issues can be fixed by simply repairing or replacing a broken part, we can explain the need for either of these. And while it might sound simple, it’s really not. There’s a process before repairs can be done, this is troubleshooting the issue and then diagnosing it. Each of these being different for each brand.

For this reason, we don’t recommend DIY repairs. They are often more expensive in the long run, especially if you void your warranty in the process. And the equipment needed to fix an issue is often quite expensive. Don’t cause more damages to your appliance by attempted DIY repairs, these are often not covered in your product warranty.

For this reason, we recommend that you hire a professional repair business. Like Peter’s Appliance Repair of Gary, IN.

Common problems, troubleshooting, and repair

Loud noises

Fridges will make an ambient noise most of the time, but if you hear strange noises such as clicking, branding or clanging, it could be an issue with the fan or ice maker. If the sound gets louder as you open the appliance door, the culprits are often the condenser or evaporator. Sometimes you may find they are jammed by something, which stops the fans from turning. Luckily, it can be replaced with ease, but if you leave it it can cause more damage.

Not cool enough

If your fridge isn’t cold enough, it’s often that the coils for the condenser have an issue. Also ensure that there’s no debris piling up, if there is your fridge may require cleaning. If your issue is still ongoing after these checks, give us a call. It could be either the evaporator or condenser fans that could require replacement.

If it’s neither of these things it could be the capacitor or start relay, these can also be replaced.

Leaks really are bad news for your home, that’s why it’s best to tend to them quickly. Usually, if your fridge is leaking, it could be the tank, water valve or filter for water. Ensure your fridge is also level on the ground. If it’s your water tank with an issue, the assembly cannot be repaired and often is cheaper to replace.

We are also able to reinstall and repair the water valve, defrosting pan and the water filter.

Should I consider a replacement?

On average we see fridges lasting up to 17 years, which of course depends on you taking care and providing regular maintenance. If your fridge is older than this, replacement may be cheaper and more cost-effective than repairs. We can assist and advise on the best option for you. Call us today.
